SNAKES IN THE RADAR OF THE FLYING CONTROL

The aviation technicians which control the radar near Banjski Rid, near Airport in Skopje, most be very careful not to step on a snake. Two meter long snake is regularly seen near the radar, and the employees must wait for it to leave in order to enter the object. To protect themselves, couple of times they’ve planted eggs with snake poison as recommended by veterinary.

The snake is around the object for three years now. We are not sure if it enters inside the object. We’ve asked the management to secure snake serum but nothing so far. The serum is around 1000 denars. Who we’ll be held responsible if someone dies?” says the flight control.

The object hosts two radars for the needs of the Regional flight control. “We watch the snake grow. We take the snake skin to our managers to understand the real danger from snake bite. Not only that we don’t have serum, we also don’t have collective insurance. Couple of years ago, 100.000 euros were given to one consultant company which should have performed screening on all work stations in the Flight control and civil aviation and prepare guidance for occupational safety and health. Nothing came out of that as well” say the technicians. They add that the Law on Occupational safety and health and the Law on working relation oblige the employer to provide personal protective equipment which should protect employees against accidents and which prescribe fines for non-compliance.

There is no insurance, which was cut upon suggestion of the State Auditor three years ago. There is a first aid kit, but I’m not sure it has snake serum in it. We use equipment and serums from the public company for airport services “Makedonija”. I’m strongly supporting the idea that there should be doctor and nurse in the flight control” – says the manager of the flight control, Toni Prgomet.

Couple of years ago, an employee from the weather-service at the flight control on Skopje’s airport was bitten by a snake on his working place and was taken to the clinic for infective diseases in Skopje to get the serum.
